The South Coast Railroad Museum honors the memory of George H. Adams, a founding member of the Goleta Depot Committee and a dedicated advocate for preserving Goleta’s history. George passed away on October 19, 1994, at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy of public service, dedication to community, and unwavering enthusiasm for historic preservation.
Early Career in Recreation and Parks
George Adams began his career in public service as Superintendent of Recreation for the City of Santa Barbara (1951-1961) before becoming the first Parks Director for Santa Barbara County. During his tenure as Parks Director (1961-1972), George was instrumental in creating eight new county parks and helped develop the County’s Open Space Program, fostering the preservation of natural spaces for public enjoyment.
Leadership in Community Organizations
Beyond his work in parks and recreation, George was a driving force in local community organizations. He served as President of the Goleta Valley Historical Society (1975-1978), played a central role in creating the Lake Los Carneros Historical Museum, and was actively involved in preserving the Goleta Train Depot. George also served as President of the Goleta Chamber of Commerce (1979-1982), further showcasing his dedication to the Goleta Valley and its heritage.
The Goleta Depot and George Adams Picnic Grove
George was an original member of the Goleta Depot Committee, formed in 1980, to save and restore the Goleta Depot as a historic landmark. His dedication to this project was marked by his tireless work and good humor, which inspired fellow volunteers and community members alike. In 1983, in recognition of George’s contributions, the County of Santa Barbara established the “George Adams Picnic Area” at Lake Los Carneros Park, a space adjacent to the depot grounds where visitors can enjoy the natural beauty George helped preserve.
A Lasting Legacy
Although he later resided in Camarillo, George remained an active supporter of the museum, regularly attending events with his wife, Helen, and joining museum travel groups. His passion for preserving Goleta’s history and creating recreational spaces for future generations made him an invaluable friend to the museum and community.
George Adams’s contributions to Santa Barbara County parks, historical preservation, and community organizations left a profound impact that continues to be felt today. The South Coast Railroad Museum is grateful for his legacy and celebrates his memory as a cornerstone of our shared history.
